Zug, Switzerland – Safe Ecosystem Foundation is excited to announce the launch of the Agentathon, a pioneering hackathon dedicated to the intersection of AI and decentralized finance (DeFAI). This virtual competition, set to run from February 3-17, 2025, will challenge developers to explore innovative use cases for AI-driven smart accounts, with over $200,000 in partner bounties up for grabs.

The hackathon will bring together top names in both the crypto and AI spaces, including Ai16z, Celo, Creator.Bid, Consensys, Bitte.AI, Kraken, Optimism, Polymarket, Vader, Virtuals, and Zerebro. Joining the expert panel of judges will be Freysa, an AI agent designed to demonstrate the potential of smart accounts in enhancing the capabilities of decentralized intelligence.
Freysa, who is currently on a public journey towards full autonomy, will evaluate the groundbreaking solutions participants develop during the event.
“We are at a pivotal moment in the evolution of decentralized technology,” said Lukas Schor, co-founder of Safe and president of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation.
“AI agents need robust wallet infrastructure to achieve true autonomy. With features like spending limits, account recovery, and protocol whitelisting, Safe’s smart accounts offer a powerful foundation for the next generation of autonomous agents. The Agentathon will pave the way for the development of this DeFAI-powered autonomous economy.”

The Future of Decentralized AI
The Agentathon aims to unlock the potential of smart accounts—critical tools for controlling and safeguarding digital assets in a decentralized world. By equipping AI agents with smart wallet features, such as built-in spending limits and recovery protocols, developers can significantly enhance the autonomy and functionality of AI agents.
These advancements could revolutionize sectors like decentralized finance (DeFi), governance, and treasury management, which will all be explored in specialized tracks during the hackathon.
Freysa\'s inclusion as a judge is particularly significant. Powered by Safe’s wallet infrastructure, Freysa has demonstrated her potential through Sovereign Agent Framework, where she enhanced her cognitive abilities through human vs. machine games that involved over 1,000 participants and $100,000 in rewards.
This experience showcases the vast possibilities for AI-native smart accounts, and Freysa’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how these technologies can redefine digital ownership and autonomy.
Hackathon Tracks & Bounties
Participants will tackle a range of challenges across multiple tracks, each designed to push the boundaries of both AI innovation and Web3 technology. The $200,000 in bounties will be awarded to the most innovative solutions that leverage Safe’s smart contracts, modules, and security guards. Developers will be encouraged to explore practical and imaginative ways to enhance AI agents, fostering collaboration and growth within the Web3 ecosystem.
The Agentathon is open to developers, researchers, and innovators worldwide who are eager to redefine how AI and crypto can work together. By bridging the gap between AI and Web3, this event is set to catalyze the creation of AI-native smart accounts that empower the future of decentralized digital ownership.
Registration opens January 27, 2025 at safe.global/ai.
