Spoofingisacybercrimewhereamaliciousactorusesdisguisetoconvincevictimsintothinkingtheyareusinganofficialortrusted–wheninfactit’safakeone.Inthiscase,TomarandothersusedafakeURLofCoinbase’scryptoexchangesite“Pro.Coinbase.Com”.TheyusedtheURLCoinbasePro.Com,completewithafraudulentwebsitethatunsuspectingvictimsunknowinglyallowedthecybercriminalstoaccesstheirauthenticationdetailsonCoinbase.

Usingremotedesktopsoftware,thefraudstersstolefromvictims,withsomecasesinvolvingimpersonationofCoinbasecustomersupportstaff.

CourtdocumentsrevealthataNorthCarolinacryptouserlostmorethan$240,000inFebruary2022.

Tomar,whousedthestolenfundstobuyluxuryvehiclesandfinancelavishtripstoDubaiandotherlocations,wasarrestedinDecember2023.HepleadedguiltytochargesincludingwirefraudconspiracyinMay2024.

Earlierthisweek,acourtintheU.S.sentenceda46-yearoldmanto20yearsinprisonovercryptofraud.
